Last Saturday marked the start of spring turkey season here in California. Despite 20+ mile per hour winds and pouring rain, Jon O and I made an attempt at bagging our first birds of the season. We watched about 80 birds come out of the roost on the property adjacent to where we were hunting. Unfortunately the massive group was up wind from us and didn’t hear a thing we called. We made a few attempts at changing position but there was no way any of the birds were going to leave the shelter of the windbreak their roosting Oaks provided. We finished early anticipating having to dig the truck out of the mud on our way out.
Things started to dry out and calm down about five days ago and tomorrow morning Mac and I will be pursuing the same group. I hope Wednesday and Thursday’s 80 degree heat got those birds fired up. I need a good Tom for the amazing turkey Osso Buco recipe in this springs issue. I’d love to hear how turkey seasons going across the country and most importantly, what do you plan on doing with your bird?
